Fiberglass Swimming Pools
A fiberglass swimming pool is a pre-formed inground pool shell, manufactured at a factory, delivered to your home, and set into an excavated hole in a single day. Fiberglass is a faster, lower-maintenance alternative to gunite — but it comes with real trade-offs: you’re limited to factory shapes, capped at about 8 feet of depth, and the shell lifespan is roughly half of a custom gunite pool. Southern Poolscapes installs fiberglass when it’s the right fit for the project. For most of our Alabama Gulf Coast and Florida Panhandle homeowners, however, we recommend custom gunite instead.
When Fiberglass Makes Sense
Fiberglass is a reasonable choice in specific situations:
- Short-term-rental properties where installation speed matters more than design freedom or resale value.
- Vacation homes where lower chemical and maintenance overhead during long vacancies is a priority.
- Tight pre-season delivery windows where the 5–9 week install timeline beats gunite’s 12–18 weeks.
- Smaller, simpler designs where a factory shell shape genuinely fits the lot and the aesthetic.
For primary residences, resale-bound homes, properties with unusual lot constraints, or anywhere the homeowner wants a one-of-one pool, gunite is the better long-term investment. See our gunite pool guide for the full case.
How Long Does a Fiberglass Pool Take to Install?
Fiberglass is the fastest in-ground pool type to install. A typical timeline from contract to swimmable water:
- Design + 3D rendering: 1–2 weeks
- Permitting: 2–5 weeks (varies by county)
- Excavation + set + plumbing: 5–7 days
- Backfill + deck pour: 1–2 weeks
- Equipment hookup, fill, startup: 3–5 days
Most homeowners are swimming within 5–9 weeks of contract — about half the time of a custom gunite pool. Speed is fiberglass’s primary advantage.
Trade-Offs to Understand Before Choosing Fiberglass
- Limited to factory shapes. Whatever shapes the manufacturer offers — that’s your menu. No vanishing edges, no grottos, no custom raised walls, no swim-up bars.
- Maximum depth ~8 feet. The factory mold dictates the depth. Most fiberglass models are 4–6 feet deep at the deepest point.
- Shell lifespan ~25–30 years. Roughly half of a gunite shell. The gel-coat finish may need a refresh after 15–20 years.
- Lower resale value uplift. Real-estate appraisers consistently value gunite pools higher than fiberglass.
- Fewer surface options. One gel-coat finish per model, in the manufacturer’s color palette. Gunite gives you dozens of plaster, pebble, and quartz options.
- Lot must match shell. Tight access, sloped yards, or unusual lot shapes often rule fiberglass out.
Where Fiberglass Does Well on the Gulf Coast
Despite the trade-offs, fiberglass has legitimate strengths in specific Gulf Coast scenarios:
- Non-porous gel-coat surface means algae and bacteria don’t embed the way they do in plaster, so you fight blooms less often and use less chlorine — useful for vacation rentals and second homes.
- Salt-system friendly because the gel-coat is unaffected by salt. Pairs well with humid Gulf Coast conditions.
- Built-in seating is included in most modern fiberglass shells — integrated benches, swim-outs, and tanning ledges come standard.
- Faster install in storm season means you can squeeze a fiberglass pool between hurricane risks more easily than a 4-month gunite build.

Frequently Asked Questions — Fiberglass Pools
Should I get a fiberglass or a gunite pool?
For most Gulf Coast homeowners we recommend gunite — it’s more durable (50+ year shell vs 25–30), more customizable (unlimited shape vs factory only), deeper if you want it, and delivers a higher resale-value uplift. Fiberglass makes sense for short-term rentals, vacation homes with long vacancies, or when speed of install is the top priority.
How long does a fiberglass pool last?
A quality fiberglass shell lasts 25–30 years. The gel-coat finish may need a refresh after 15–20 years — a one-day buff and seal, not a full replaster. Gunite shells last about twice as long.
How long does fiberglass pool installation take?
From contract to swimmable water, most fiberglass installations take 5–9 weeks. The shell itself is set in a single day; the rest of the time is permitting, plumbing, decking, and equipment startup. Speed is fiberglass’s primary advantage over gunite (12–18 weeks).
What fiberglass pool brands do you install?
Southern Poolscapes works with the leading fiberglass manufacturers serving the Gulf Coast. We’ll walk you through model options based on your yard, budget, and how you’ll use the pool during the design consultation. If your goals require something not available in a factory shell, we’ll point you toward gunite.
Can fiberglass pools handle the Gulf Coast water table?
Yes, but only with proper engineering. We always include a hydrostatic relief valve, properly compacted base, and adequate dewatering during installation — critical in low-lying parts of Mobile, Baldwin, and Escambia counties. Gunite handles water-table conditions better than fiberglass because the shell is monolithic.
Do fiberglass pools work with saltwater systems?
Fiberglass pairs well with saltwater systems — the gel-coat surface is unaffected by salt and the gentler water suits Gulf Coast humidity. Gunite works with salt systems too, with proper corrosion-resistant equipment and coping.
Can you customize a fiberglass pool?
The shell itself comes in factory shapes — that’s the fundamental limitation. Everything around it is custom: deck design, tile and coping selection, water features, lighting, automation, outdoor kitchen integration, and screen enclosure or pergola tie-ins. If true customization of the pool itself matters to you, choose gunite instead.
Do you handle pool permits for fiberglass installs?
Yes. We handle all permitting in-house with the appropriate authority for your city or county — City of Mobile, Mobile County, Baldwin County, City of Pensacola, Escambia County, Santa Rosa County, Walton County, Okaloosa County, Bay County, and Leon County.
Do you offer financing for fiberglass pools?
Yes. We partner with Lyon Financial, HFS Financial, and Viking Capital — offering competitive rates and long terms for qualified buyers. See financing options.
